I passed by Starbucks the other day and had a strong craving for a rich chocolate flavor with a burst of peppermint – yes, the Peppermint Mocha is back to entice me. Instead of succumbing to the red Starbucks cups I headed to my local grocer for a bag of fresh mint to make my own healthy concoction. Using my handy Vita-Mix I blended Cacao, Maca, Bananas, Mint and Almond Milk for a nutritious and energizing smoothie.
Maca is a root from Peru that has been used for centuries to balance hormones, increase energy and stamina. It is rich in iron, potassium, magnesium and B-vitamins and has a strong distinct taste. Maca will leave you feeling energized yet balanced throughout the day without the stimulating effect of caffeine.
Raw Cacao (theobroma cacao)
Cacao is the natural source of all chocolate products. It has a slightly bitter taste and is rich in antioxidants, minerals, magnesium, vitamin C and so much more. In this recipe I used the powder to intensify the rich taste of cacao and the nibs to add a crunchy texture.
Combining it with the creamy banana texture, the hint of mint and the pleasant taste of Almond milk left my taste buds wanting more and my body feeling good. Who needs a Starbucks Peppermint Mocha when you can create your own?
Mint, Cacao & Maca Smoothie
What you’ll need:
- 1 cup Almond Milk
- 1 Banana (Frozen)
- 2 Tbs. Cacao Powder
- 1 ½ Tbs. Cacao Nibs
- 1 tsp Maca Powder
- approx 10 mint leaves
- 3-4 ice cubes
Add all ingredients into the blender. Blend to a smooth consistency. Be careful not to over-blend to keep Cacao Nibs in tack for a crunchy texture. Pour into cup and enjoy!
